A short film exploring identity in various forms. Who are you without your fears?
Who are you without your fears?
When writing through the scenes of this short I asked myself who I was in the current year (2020). I questioned what version of myself made it's greatest impression on the people around me, and what version they saw. I decided to focus on what I valued about myself, something I learned by facing my fears.
Using a mixture of live action and 3D Motion allowed me to create several scenes and visual metaphors that came straight from my mind, many that could not be created in real life. The narrative goal was to connect each vignette or thought together seamlessly. I had originally taken inspiration from David Lynch and his dream sequences in films such as "Mulholland Drive". I edited the sequences to create a somewhat disjointed and lucid experience, like a dream.
Each of the sequences are combined together with a series of songs that I had in rotation at the time, and fit the motif. From a smooth drive into the city, to a joyful expression of dance and jazz, moments of dread and gripping fear, to a soulful gospel release. "Self Portrait" is a short surrealist journey through the mind.
