A short film and plea to the preservation and protection of culture.
There has been a great hunger for all things cultural throughout history, but no time like the present time, the time of the internet, has there ever been such an overconsumption. My goal was to speak to the protection of culture. When writing and planning out this short, I wanted to create an atmosphere of paranoia. Originally I wanted to show more imagery of consumption, the idea of being consumed, and exploited, but settled on the idea of being constantly watched and pursued.
The general philosophy I led with came from my thoughts in my blog post "Respecting Our Influences: A Responsibility Beyond Citing", where I went into more detail about my feelings of inspiration and culture.
The series of shot compositions were stylized to be dramatic in nature, focused on lighting silhouettes, spotlight framing, etc. I've been enamored with the lighting and scene setups of stage plays, something that comes up in my work fairly often. A combination of wide angle, portrait, fisheye, and anamorphic lenses were used to maximize the range of shots I could use.
Greenscreen footage was necessary for a few of the more literal compositions, while the rest of the shots had either curtains or muslin to extend black backgrounds. I aimed to make this a high-effort\low-pressure project, one that allowed it to be put together with a bit of ease.
