Lessons learned in the light!
If there's one thing I believe all art/photography teachers should teach above all else, it's lighting. One thing that stays true to me is that all things artistic are experienced through the senses, and the most common sense is sight. The lighting in this series was my effort to test more dramatic lighting with LED lighting (Amaran 150c & Amaran T2c). Dramatic lighting and LED lighting, the easiest way to draw abstract emotion. This series has inspired a visual style I had once only been able to see in Italian Giallo Horror films during Film school, and I intend to study it further.

Leading up to this shoot, I realized I was obsessed and in love with my new lighting setup (Amaran 150c & Amaran T2C tube light). These lights made many ideas I once had possible with ease, the LED functionality just made it that much easier to realize. Once upon a time spotlights on a small budget were something only a projector could achieve, and not even that reliably. With the spotlight attachment for the 150c, shaping my lighting consistently made each photo easier to create from shot to shot.

My inspiration came from Giallo cinema, a sub-genre originated and popularized in Italian horror films. Most of my influence came from popular films like “Suspiria” (1977). I focused on the striking color contrast that would be used to create a sense of unease and surreality. I enjoy using colour theory to influence psychology in a way that makes them work as more than just eyecandy.
